AUGUST PLANT of the MONTH is ...SALVIA!
Salvia, commonly called "sage" is the largest genus in the mint family.
This group of plants have approximately 900 species of annuals, perennials, and soft wooded shrubs. And they are a particular favorite of hummingbirds.
Lucky for us Central Coasters, many of the varieties are native here (or think they're natives) so they don't really need water ... or much of anything else!
Just arriving at OTN are the Mexicana "Limelight" (pictured), Orchid Glow
and Bright Eyes.
The Mexicana "Limelight" is one of the most beautiful of all Sages, as it bears a great abundance of vivid flowers protruding from showy lime green calyxes on upright, foot long spikes. Base-branching, forming lots of branches (especially after hard pruning in winter), you get zillions of spikes that are long lasting in bouquets, too.
It is well suited for dry garden areas, reaches 3-4 feet in height and has a long flowering season (from spring to fall in wetter areas and fall to winter in drier areas). This plant grows best in full sun and a well-drained soil and it will not tolerate wet
feet or a poorly drained soil. plant provides an amazing splash of color blooming
all summer.

Avocado Fun Facts!
1. Lots of people don't like Bacons, but they are the pollinator for Hass.
2. A woman can do wonders to balance her hormones by eating one avocado a week.
3. Avocados help to keep our skin and hair youthful and vibrant.
4. Our local "Best Guacamole on the Mesa" winner says, "Always use one Bacon for every 6 Haas when your smushing up your green gold."

Black Mission and Brown Turkey
Most of us are familiar with the popular Mission Fig but the Brown Turkey might be more of a mystery.
It also goes by the names: Lee's Perpetual, Eastern Brown Turkey, Brunswick, Ramsey, Harrison, Texas Everbearing. Whatever you call these figs they make wonderful preserves!
